Dog Cross Stitch Pattern from a Photo
A chart of your own dog is a classic gift for a dog lover. A good photo and the right size make the difference between "that's a dog" and "that's our dog".
Choose the size
| Width (stitches) | 14-count Aida | 18-count Aida |
|---|---|---|
| 60 | 10.9 cm / 4.3 in | 8.5 cm / 3.3 in |
| 80 | 14.5 cm / 5.7 in | 11.3 cm / 4.4 in |
| 120 | 21.8 cm / 8.6 in | 16.9 cm / 6.7 in |
Small breeds and close-up faces work at 60โ80 stitches. A full-body dog or a dog with markings (husky, collie, beagle) looks better at 100+.
Coat types
- Two-tone dogs (husky, border collie): strong contrast. These are very readable even at small sizes.
- Fawn and golden dogs (French bulldog, golden retriever): many close beige shades. Expect 18โ20 colours.
- Curly coats (poodle, doodle): texture becomes soft blocks of colour. That is fine, because the outline carries the likeness.
- Black dogs: pick a photo with light on the face, or the eyes and nose blend in.
Photo tips
Take the photo at the dog's eye level, outdoors in shade. Avoid busy backgrounds if you can, although PetMagi removes the background and crops to the dog either way.
