Cat Cross Stitch Pattern from a Photo
Cats are some of the most rewarding cross stitch subjects: big eyes, clear ear shapes and strong coat colours. Each coat type has its own pitfalls when you turn a photo into a chart.
Black cats
Most of the chart will be two or three near-black threads. The eyes carry the whole design, so pick a photo where both eyes are open and lit. If the shot is dark, the eye colours may merge with the fur.
White and cream cats
White fur photographed indoors often turns grey or blue. Use daylight, and expect several pale shades (for example white, ecru and light greys) in the key. Stitching on a coloured fabric makes a white cat stand out.
Ginger and orange cats
These are the easiest coats to chart. Orange, cream and a darker rust give natural stripes. A clear photo of the face usually needs 15โ19 colours.
Tabby and calico cats
Stripes and patches need more colours, and a larger chart (100+ stitches wide) shows the pattern better. Expect a few small areas of confetti stitches. You can merge single stitches into their neighbours as you go.
