Custom Pet Cross Stitch Pattern from Your Photo: How It Works

A custom pet cross stitch pattern turns one photo of your dog, cat or rabbit into a chart you can stitch on Aida fabric. Here is what happens between the photo and the printed chart, and how to get a result that still looks like your pet.

1. The pet is cut out of the background

Sofas, carpets and gardens add hundreds of stitches nobody wants. PetMagi cuts the pet out first and crops the chart to the animal, so even a pet standing far away fills the pattern.

2. The photo is reduced to a stitch grid

A typical chart is about 80 stitches wide. On 14-count Aida that is roughly 14.5 cm (5.7 in) across, which is a comfortable first project and fits a standard hoop.

3. Colours are matched to real DMC threads

Each colour group is matched to the nearest DMC stranded cotton. Groups that land on the same thread are merged, so you never buy two skeins of the same colour. Most pet charts use 14โ€“20 colours.

4. You get a chart you can print

Tips for a better pattern

On-screen colours are approximate. Check thread colours against a real DMC card before you buy.
