Christmas pet names: festive ideas for dogs, cats and small pets
A pet who arrives in December often ends up with a Christmas name โ and the best ones still sound good when the decorations are back in the loft. Below are our festive picks for dogs, cats and smaller pets, each with where the name comes from, plus a few rules of thumb we use when we help families choose.

How to pick a Christmas name that lasts all year
Most Christmas names fall into four families: Santa's reindeer (Dasher, Comet, Blitzen), carols and stories (Noel, Carol, Clarence, Zuzu), food and spice (Gingersnap, Cocoa, Nutmeg) and winter nature (Holly, Juniper, Spruce). Reindeer and story names feel playful; spice and nature names feel softer and are easier to live with in summer. If you love the season but don't want a name that only makes sense in December, pick from the nature and spice groups โ Juniper, Cocoa or Holly sound like ordinary pet names in June.
Then run the usual checks. One or two syllables are easiest for a pet to learn, so long names like Ebenezer or Sugarplum usually get shortened (Eb, Plum) โ make sure you like the short version too. Avoid names that sound like commands: "Joy" and "no" are close enough to confuse a puppy. And say it out loud across a park or garden; "Blitzen!" is great fun to shout, "Mistletoe!" less so.

Big, steady dogs tend to suit the weighty names here (Donner, Klaus, Spruce), while terriers and small spaniels wear the bouncy ones (Jingle, Dasher, Gingersnap). For a white dog, Frosty, Blizzard and Snowflake are obvious; for a black one, try something from the night-before-Christmas sky, like Comet or Star.

FAQ
What is a good Christmas name for a dog?
Reindeer names (Dasher, Blitzen, Comet), film names (Buddy from "Elf", Max from "The Grinch") and winter nature names (Spruce, Holly, Juniper) are the most usable. Pick one or two syllables so it is easy to call.
What is a cute Christmas name for a cat?
Tinsel, Sugarplum, Mistletoe, Nutmeg and Snowflake are sweet; Grinch and Scrooge are funny; Tomte and Lucia are Scandinavian ideas that are less common.
Will a Christmas name feel strange in summer?
Spice and nature names (Cocoa, Ginger, Holly, Juniper, Ivy) sound like everyday names all year. Santa, Rudolph or Eggnog are more obviously seasonal โ fun, but you will be explaining them in July.
Is it a good idea to give a pet as a Christmas present?
Only if the person receiving it has chosen to have a pet and is ready for it. Many shelters suggest giving a voucher, lead or bed at Christmas and bringing the pet home once the holiday chaos is over.
