What “hand-painted style” means here
When people search for a hand painted pet portrait, they usually want a particular look: visible brush strokes, the warm glow of oil paint, soft watercolour washes that fade into the paper, or the dusty softness of pastel. That look is what PetMagi recreates. You upload a photo of your dog or cat, choose a painted style, and our AI builds a new image of your pet in that style, keeping the markings, the ear shape and the expression that make your pet recognisable.
What it is not: a painting. Nobody sits at an easel with your photo, and there is no canvas that was touched by a brush. We think it is important to say this clearly, because some sellers blur the line between “hand-painted” and “painted-look”. If the physical, one-of-a-kind object matters to you, for example for a family heirloom, please commission a human artist. If you want the look today, at a small price, and you are happy with a digital file you can print, PetMagi is made for you.
The painted styles you can choose
- Royal oil painting. A classical, Renaissance-inspired portrait: your pet on a velvet chair in a regal cape, with deep reds, gold and soft brush texture. This is our most popular painted look and the closest to a traditional oil portrait.
- Storybook watercolour. Light washes, gentle outlines and lots of white space, like an illustration from a children’s picture book. It suits long-haired cats, puppies and any pet with a sweet face.
- Pastel and soft-oil memorial looks. Golden clouds and a spring meadow, painted softly. Many people choose these for a pet that has passed away; our memorial portraits add gentle wording and a keepsake card.
- Christmas painting looks. A Santa hat in the snow, a cosy sweater by the tree and other seasonal scenes. See the pet portrait gift guide if it is a present.
How to get a portrait that really looks painted
The photo matters more than anything else. Five quick tips from the portraits we have made:
- Use soft daylight. A photo near a window, without flash, gives smooth tones that turn into soft brush strokes. Harsh flash creates hard shadows that look less painterly.
- Get down to eye level. Portrait painters work at the subject’s eye level, and the AI does best with the same view. Let the face fill a good part of the frame.
- Keep the background simple. A plain wall, a sofa or grass is ideal. The style replaces the background anyway, so a busy room only gets in the way.
- Choose the style for the fur. Fluffy and long-haired pets look lovely in watercolour; short, glossy coats shine in the royal oil look; pale pets glow in pastel.
- One pet per photo. Pets only: photos showing people are rejected automatically to protect privacy.
Printing and framing your painted-style portrait
The HD files are made for printing. A 5×7 or 8×10 inch print from any local photo shop looks great, and you can order canvas or fine-art paper prints from the print service you already trust, which often gives a more “painted” feel than glossy photo paper. For gifts, add the optional +$3 upgrade bundle to get a print-ready 5×7 greeting card PDF, a phone wallpaper and a black-and-white art version. Because everything is digital, there is no shipping wait and no customs, wherever you live.

Hand-painted style pet portrait FAQ
Are these portraits really hand-painted?
No. They are AI-generated digital images in a hand-painted style (oil, watercolour and pastel looks), made from your photo. That is why they take minutes and cost a few dollars instead of weeks and hundreds of dollars. We never present them as paintings made by a human artist.
How long does it take?
The free watermarked preview appears in about a minute. After payment, the HD files are ready to download straight away. A commissioned hand painting usually takes 2 to 6 weeks plus shipping.
How much does it cost?
Packs cost $4.99, $9.99 or $14.99 as a one-time payment, with no subscription. The preview is free and you only pay if you love it.
Can I print it on canvas?
Yes. The HD files are yours for personal use. Any photo printer or canvas print service can print them; canvas or matte fine-art paper gives the most painted feel.
What if my pet doesn't look right?
Try a clearer photo or another style for free before paying. After purchase you get 2 free re-dos, and a full refund if delivery fails. See our refund policy for details.
Which pets work?
Dogs and cats work best, and most other pets with a clear face work too. One pet per photo, no people in the picture.
