How to celebrate your dog's first birthday
One year old is a big milestone: your puppy has made it through teething and the toughest training months. Here's how to mark the day, and a few grown-up-dog things worth checking around now.
Ideas for the big day
- Re-visit a favourite place โ the beach or park where they had their first walk.
- A "then and now" photo โ recreate their first photo with you, same spot and same toy.
- A puppy playdate with 2โ3 dogs they already know (see party ideas).
- A dog-safe cake or pupcakes โ try our easy recipe.
- A new "big dog" toy โ now that puppy teeth are gone, a tougher chew or puzzle toy.
- Learn a new trick together โ spin, high five or "find it" are quick to teach with treats.
- Make a first-year photo book or a birthday card from your favourite picture.
Is my dog an adult at one?
It depends on size. Small breeds are usually close to their adult size by around a year. Large and giant breeds often keep growing and maturing until 18โ24 months, so they may still act like teenagers for a while. Behaviour-wise, many dogs go through an "adolescent" phase between about 6 and 18 months โ keep training short, positive and consistent.
One-year health checklist
- Vet check and vaccine boosters โ many puppies are due their first annual boosters around a year old. Your vet will tell you which ones apply where you live.
- Food โ ask whether it's time to move from puppy to adult food (often later for large breeds).
- Parasite prevention โ flea, tick and worm protection by weight, which has probably changed.
- Microchip and ID tag โ check the registry has your current phone number.
- Teeth โ start a tooth-brushing habit now with a dog toothpaste.
- Collar and harness size โ puppies grow out of them quickly.
Keep the party puppy-safe
Young dogs are curious and still learning manners. Keep the guest list small, give lots of breaks, pick up wrapping paper and balloon pieces, and keep human food (especially chocolate, grapes and anything with xylitol) out of reach. A one-hour party followed by a nap is perfect.
