Easy dog-safe birthday cake recipe
This small peanut butter and banana cake takes about 10 minutes to mix and 25 minutes to bake. It uses everyday ingredients and skips anything dangerous for dogs.
Ingredients (one 6-inch cake or 6 pupcakes)
- 1 cup (120 g) whole-wheat flour (or oat flour for sensitive tummies)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 ripe banana, mashed
- ¼ cup (65 g) xylitol-free natural peanut butter
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup (60 ml) water or unsalted broth (no onion or garlic)
Frosting: ½ cup plain unsweetened Greek yogurt mixed with 1 tbsp peanut butter, or plain mashed potato / sweet potato for a dairy-free option.
Method
- Heat the oven to 175 °C / 350 °F and grease a small tin or muffin tray.
- Mix the banana, peanut butter, egg and water until smooth.
- Stir in the flour and baking powder until just combined.
- Bake 25–30 minutes (pupcakes 15–18) until a skewer comes out clean.
- Cool completely, then frost. Decorate with a few blueberries or a dog biscuit.
Check the peanut butter label
Some "light" or "no sugar added" peanut butters contain xylitol, sometimes listed as "birch sugar". Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs even in small amounts. Use plain peanut butter with only peanuts (and maybe salt).
Never put these in a dog cake
- Chocolate or cocoa, coffee
- Xylitol / birch sugar and other artificial sweeteners
- Grapes, raisins, currants, sultanas
- Onion, garlic, chives (including powders and stock cubes)
- Macadamia nuts
- Alcohol, raw yeast dough
How much cake can my dog have?
Treat the cake as a treat, not a meal. A slice about the size of your dog's normal treat portion is enough for a small dog; larger dogs can have a little more. Many vets suggest treats stay under roughly 10% of daily calories. Freeze leftover slices for up to a month.
Variations
- Pumpkin cake – swap the banana for ½ cup plain canned pumpkin (not pie filling).
- Apple carrot cake – ½ cup grated carrot and ½ grated apple (no core or seeds).
- Grain-free – use coconut flour (½ cup) and an extra egg.
If your dog has allergies, diabetes, pancreatitis or a sensitive stomach, ask your vet before baking. For cats, see the cat-safe cake recipe.

FAQ
What can I put in a dog birthday cake?
Dog-safe basics are whole-wheat or oat flour, egg, banana, plain pumpkin, carrot, apple (no seeds) and xylitol-free peanut butter. Frost with plain yogurt or mashed potato.
Can dogs eat cake with frosting?
Not human frosting, which is full of sugar and often butter or chocolate. Plain unsweetened yogurt, a little peanut butter or mashed sweet potato make a safe 'frosting'.
Is peanut butter safe for dogs?
Plain peanut butter is fine in small amounts, but always check the label for xylitol (birch sugar), which is toxic to dogs.
