Gotcha Day ideas: celebrating your pet's adoption anniversary
Gotcha Day is the anniversary of the day your pet came home. For many rescue pets it's also the easiest 'birthday' to celebrate, because it's the one date you know for sure.
At home
- Cook a special dog-safe cake or cat-safe tuna cake.
- Make a "welcome home" photo with the same doormat or blanket from their first day.
- Write down one thing they taught you this year and keep the notes in a jar.
- Build a cardboard castle (cats) or a snuffle mat (dogs).
- Have a movie night on the sofa – they get the good spot.
- Frame their adoption certificate or a Gotcha Day certificate with their photo.
Out and about
- Visit the place you first met, if they're comfortable there.
- A new walking route or a dog-friendly café.
- A "sniffari" – a slow walk where they choose the route.
- A day trip to the beach, lake or forest.
Give back to the rescue
- Send the shelter an update photo – staff love hearing how adoptees are doing.
- Donate food, blankets or toys from the shelter's wish list.
- Sponsor a long-stay animal for a month.
- Volunteer for a dog walk or cat socialising shift.
- Share your pet's story online to encourage adoption.
Celebrate with others
- Invite friends who adopted from the same rescue.
- Post a "years home" photo with a caption (see caption ideas).
- Send Gotcha Day cards to family members your pet loves.
- Start a yearly tradition: the same photo spot every year.
- Combine it with an annual vet check so you never forget it.
Gotcha Day or birthday?
You don't have to choose. Many families celebrate both: an estimated birthday (see how to estimate it) and the adoption day. Some people prefer "Adoption Day" or "Homecoming Day" as a name – any name works.
PetMagi makes a Gotcha Day card, party kit and certificate from your pet's photo. You can also get a free reminder a week before next year's date.
