How to make a custom song about your dog

A good dog song isn't about 'a good boy' – it's about the sock thief who snores through thunderstorms. Here is how to get the details right, plus real examples you can play.

1. Collect the details that make it your dog

• Three habits nobody else's dog has. "Steals socks", "barks at the vacuum", "sleeps on her back" beat "loves to play" every time.
• One favourite thing – a toy, a food, a person, a walk. It becomes the line people remember.
• Name and nickname. The name goes in every chorus, so pick the version you actually shout across the park.
• Breed or look (optional): "a little corgi with a heart so wide" rhymes better than you'd think.

2. A simple song structure that works

Most pet songs follow the same shape. Use it if you write your own, or check that a generator follows it:

[verse] habit 1 + habit 2, where it happens (morning, sofa, park)
[chorus] the name, twice – then why you love them
[verse] habit 3 + the favourite thing
[chorus] repeat
[bridge] one quiet, honest line ("you curl up close and I hear our song")
[chorus] repeat, then end on the name

Here is the start of a real PetMagi lyric sheet, made from three habits (wakes me at dawn, steals socks, zoomies) and one favourite thing (cheese):

Biscuit, you wake me up at dawn,
You steal my socks, the whole day long,
a little corgi with a heart so wide,
there's nowhere I'd rather be than by your side.

3. Pick a music style that matches the dog

• Feel-good pop – zoomies dogs, puppies, anything with endless energy.
• Country – farm dogs, hikers, the dog who rides shotgun.
• Gentle lullaby – seniors, sleepy cuddlers, and memorial songs.
• Hip-hop – the dog with attitude (and a thousand-yard side-eye).
• Rock anthem – big dogs, loud dogs, birthday parties.
